Getting creative with Generative AI: Media & Entertainment Industry

For those of you who know - I've recently started a podcast called Chit Chat Chai and so far it's been an incredible journey having conversations with fantastic people about purposeful topics. But it has also been an eye opener into the world of media, entertainment and content creation. Link to my YouTube Channel here: https://www.youtube.com/@chitchatchai/videos

This is a blog that covers my own journey learning about generative AI and how it's impacting the various industries that we interact with. If this interests you in the least, feel free to subscribe to get the latest updates.

Firstly, lets understand how you get to Generative AI.

Artificial Intelligence > Machine Learning > Generative AI.

What is AI, ML and Generative AI?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) encompasses a broad range of techniques and processes focused on creating intelligent systems and ways of processing.

Machine Learning (ML) specialises in developing algorithms that learn from data to make predictions and decisions.

Generative AI leverages machine learning to generate original and realistic content

Now that we understand at a very very very high level the foundations of how we have got to Generative AI, lets have a look at how it can change the Media & Entertainment and Content industry:

The following is an extract from ChatGPT - asking what it believes are the changes coming. You will see my thoughts after the GPT prompts in Blue.

  1. Content Generation and Automation: Generative AI has enabled the automation of content creation, especially in areas like journalism, marketing, and social media. Chatbots powered by generative models can generate news articles, product descriptions, and social media posts, saving time and resources for content creators. This technology can also assist in generating personalized recommendations for users based on their preferences and behaviour. Creating a chatbot that has a history of all your interactions through posts, tweets, messages etc, will help tailor the chatbot to incorporate your personality in its own generative posts. Right now the Chatbots can't emulate humour and diverse personalities - but with enough data it really could nail this!

  2. Visual Effects and Animation: Generative AI has revolutionized the field of visual effects and animation in the entertainment industry. It allows for the creation of stunning and realistic visual effects in movies, TV shows, and video games. Generative models can simulate complex physics, generate lifelike characters and creatures, and produce breath-taking visual sequences. This technology has significantly enhanced the visual storytelling capabilities of filmmakers and game developers. My podcast is a great use case to see how visual effects and animation can work in pre-recorded material. It might even be worth using this type of AI to record a podcast wholly and just have it mimic the audio. It will be fun to see how we can play with this in the future.

  3. Personalized Media and Recommendations: Generative AI enables personalized media experiences by analysing user preferences and generating tailored content recommendations. Platforms like streaming services, music applications, and news aggregators leverage generative models to suggest movies, songs, articles, and other media that align with individual tastes. This personalization enhances user engagement and satisfaction while also facilitating content discovery. Please no, no more personalised marketing and adverts on my screen. I'm tired of worrying if my phone is listening to me when I see adverts now!!!

  4. Deepfakes and Visual Manipulation: Generative AI has brought both excitement and concerns to the media industry through the creation of deepfake technology. Deepfakes use generative models to superimpose one person's face onto another's in videos, often with highly realistic results. While this technology raises ethical and privacy concerns, it also has potential applications in entertainment, filmmaking, and virtual reality. Not a fan of deepfakes or visual manipulation. Its like digital genjutsu. Might as well call it Sharingan-AI. It would be cool to see our favourite movies with a different cast all-together - but it wouldnt be able to embody the actors essence. For example, could anyone else play Cap'n Jack Sparrow any better?

  5. Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality: Generative AI plays a crucial role in creating immersive augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) experiences. It can generate realistic virtual environments, 3D models, and virtual characters that enhance the sense of presence for users. By leveraging generative models, content creators can develop captivating AR and VR applications for gaming, training, architecture, and other interactive experiences. I'm still not sold on the AR and VR hype... Although I'm excited to see the development of Hybrid VR. Wearing glasses and getting things done on the move - that's something I'd be interested in. If its not seamless - I can't see it being a vibe.

  6. Music Composition and Remixing: Generative AI has expanded possibilities in music composition and remixing. Artists and producers can use generative models to assist in creating original compositions, exploring new musical styles, and generating unique combinations of melodies and beats. This technology empowers musicians with a tool to spark creativity and experiment with novel musical expressions. I have actually started playing around with G-AI in Music - and let me tell you - it is INSANE. I'm not a music producer or composer by any means - and you can literally make whole beats and melodies based on descriptive prompts like 'make it more melancholic, more dreamy, make it pop - but less 2000s and more 90s.' I wonder how music producers will incorporate this into their existing tools.

  7. Storytelling and Narrative Generation: Generative AI is transforming the way stories are created and told. It can assist writers and game developers in generating interactive narratives, character dialogues, and branching storylines. By utilizing generative models, content creators can dynamically adapt stories based on user interactions, creating personalized and engaging storytelling experiences. I'm interested in the creative element of AI - I will be writing another series on how good the creative script writing can be - and potentially shoot a short video to showcase it. An all AI production, but the only thing real is the actors - I wonder how it'll do!

Gen - AI is accelerating the innovation in numerous industries and is making the entry level into certain areas incredibly low.

Stay tuned to my Youtube channel where I'll be testing some of these concepts out and feel free to subscribe to this blog to keep up to date with the series.
